I’d like to autocross my MR2 again but my mechanic recommends against it until the front subframe is fixed. Problem is, replacement parts (short of taking them off another MR2) are entirely unavailable. What’s OPPO know about aftermarket options?
I found this “ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ” kit that replaces the parts that are damaged, but it’s obviously going to require a lot of labor to set up. I trust that the local shop I use can do this, but I don’t expect it to be cheap.
Does this even look like a valid option, or are there other ways of replacing a less-than-perfect subframe? I’m open to any sort of solutions as long as the car will be sturdy and well-sorted for autocross. I’d even go for a custom-fabricated solution if necessary.
I miss autocross.

Ah, but I know not how to use one :(
You’re correct though!

Psh, when has that ever stopped anyone?
But seriously, it’s not hard. And fun. Until you set yourself on fire. Then it’s REALLY fun!

True story.
Bought mig and stick welders. Wish I had time to run out to a store and pick up some material to weld. Work during week and on weekends they are only open for very few hours. No Sunday. Need to get my skills going. Otherwise my wife will kill me soon for keep buying tools and never learning how to use them

Have you looked around in junkyard or JDM parts dealers to see if you could find a subframe in somewhat better condition?

Can you buy a used subframe?
The easiest cheap route is to seam weld everything, it’s labor intensive but inexpensive. You’d need a welder but those aren’t too expensive and although you don’t know how to weld, you can learn. I seam welded some key points on my chassis last year with a cheapo welder and a little practice.

Do you have pictures of your subframe in the current condition, or just a stock image of what it looks like?

Mmmmm, dreaming of replacing everything up front with tube framing.

Here’s the driver’s side (intact)
And the passenger’s side (with repairs for daily driving but not recommended by my mechanic for autocross)
The previous owner’s repairs were far sketchier, with the bolt welded in since it wouldn’t fit properly.

I’ve been scouring ebay (and lots of Toyota parts sites) for the crossmember that needs to be replaced but I’ve had no luck.
With a busy summer schedule I don’t know if I’ll have time to learn to weld. It’s on my list though :D

That heavy duty cross member looks bad ass! Plus it is new, so you don’t have to worry about it having prior damage or rust. When it is all said and done this will be the cheapest and best route. Get the aftermarket one. It will cost more, but it is better than factory.

I haven’t had any luck finding a replacement in better condition. Short of buying an entire front clip from Japan, I’m not really sure how to get an OEM crossmember.

I’m considering budgeting for that simply to ensure a truly sturdy chassis. Would class me to the stratosphere in autocross, but that’s just a good excuse to become a better driver :)

Literally cringed at that.
Would those aftermarket pieces replace that section? Ie: cut out the bad section and weld in the new piece?
If so, I say go with those aftermarket pieces and find a good fab shop and have them fix the whole subframe.

The aftermarket crossmember would replace the section and then some. It’s a universal fit (i.e. fabricate and customize to fit). I agree on the cringeworthiness of the subframe...

So is this all cut and re-weld? Maybe the heavy duty kit would be best. If it’s bolt on maybe these guys would sell you a front half of a car. I don’t see an auto dismantler taking the time to torch off pieces of an intact chassis.

Since I’ll be getting into more autocross, I’ll probably do the heavy duty kit. That’s a cool site though, I might spend some time looking for extra parts.

I had wonderfully good luck with the outfits in Rancho Cordova. I did a full replacement of the air suspension on my Subaru XT with coil overs from a Loyal wagon for $250.

Is it specific in any way to the mr2, or completely universal? If it’s completely universal then I wouldn’t actually bother with it and would instead try to find a used subframe and take it to a fab shop to have it reinforced and then install that.

Fellow MR2 owner here - have you tried calling JDM california and asking about the crossmember from their front clip? They do tons of front clips so they may just have one left over from a partout. Also the CL add below has parts cars.
